The main character of the story is Varvara Ivanovna Slutskaya. She is a former teacher, who is now retired. Varvara likes reading detective novels by Agatha Christie and poking her nose everywhere. Varvara Ivanovna moves into an apartment to her son Roman and his wife Alena in order to help with raising grandchildren Gosha and Lisa. Initially, Varvara Ivanovna’s relationship with her daughter-in-law does not work out very smoothly: two housewives “in the same kitchen” always get along in a tough way. In addition to it, Varvara Ivanovna, has her own opinions and methods of raising grandchildren. Alena considers them too soft. Once Varvara Ivanovna returned home and found the corpse of a female neighbor in the elevator. An investigator of Internal Affairs Department Ivan Bolotnikov, who is a neighbor and a friend of the Slutskys is in charge of the case. Varvara Ivanovna began her investigation. Vyazmin, yet another neighbor, retiree and a friend of the female lead who is at the same time a former instructor at the Academy of Counterintelligence helps her with this.
Unrestrained energy, innate curiosity, combined with the delicacy of an old master, and, of course, a thorough knowledge of the detective genre enable Varvara Ivanovna to look at a crime from a slightly different angle than that of the investigators…
